Recording notes: tracks 1–3 use Gaisberg's April 1902 Caruso sessions with pianist Salvatore Cottone, from Naxos Complete Recordings Vol. 1; not later Victor versions or modern orchestral reconstructions. Track 13 uses the original Blue Note studio Moanin' master, not a live version or alternate take. Producer/engineer roles are distinct: Rudy Van Gelder is the recording engineer; Tom Dowd's chapter spans engineering and production. Phil Spector's Wall of Sound also reflects Larry Levine and Jack Nitzsche. Brian Wilson's American Spring selection has David Sandler and Stephen Desper as collaborators. Lewis Merenstein produced Astral Weeks with Brooks Arthur engineering, co-produced Vintage Violence with John Cale, and produced Cass Elliot with Benny Golson arranging. Van Morrison's chapter explores his own production, with shared credits where applicable. The three recent selections are retained intentionally as part of the user-approved draft.
Optional archival prelude, outside Spotify playlist: Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville: Au clair de la lune (9 April 1860), recovered in 2008: https://firstsounds.org/sounds/scott.php (opens in a new tab).
